Around the Site Suggestions: Volume 3

:iconhappywaveplz: Welcome to Around the Site Suggestions! This article will be published every other week and it will feature different suggestions from around the site. Suggestions will be taken from the visual suggestions gallery, the written suggestions gallery , the suggestions forum, the weekly site updates from #hq and anywhere else suggestions are posted. As well as featuring these suggestions, this article will also contain different discussion topics about different aspects of the site and how you would like to see them improved.

If you have a suggestion you would like featured in this article feel free to note me, ^Katara-Alchemist, with your suggestion and I'll include it in the next article! It doesn't even have to be yours, it can just be a cool one that you've see while browsing the site. Feel free to note me with suggestions for the discussion topic at the end as well.

Suggestions From the Site Updates

=FantasyLost Had several suggestions related to the favorites feature and galleries in general.

Select a "start" page number for the SitBack feature. Right now, SitBack always initiates playing from the most current deviation added to the folder, no matter where you are looking within the folder. When you have lots of Faves like I have (a bit over 5,000), you never get the chance to view your older Faves using SitBack; well, unless you let it run unattended for a half hour while you go fix lunch or something and then come back later to watch it. But that's a rather haphazard method to use to enjoy your Favorites. Using Collections, of course, gives one less deviations inside one folder to run through; but then, for me, I might only get to look at insects rather than at the variety of art I have in my general Favorites folder.

Have the option to select navigation page numbers from both the top and the bottom of the page. When doing general browsing through Favorites, it seems so pointless to have to navigate all the way to the bottom of the page just to move on to the next page or manually enter a page number to skip over pages. And, yes, I know that I can quickly get to the bottom using Command+Down Arrow. But that means going back and forth between mouse and keyboard over and over and over again, which is no fun.

Make it possible to add a deviation to multiple folder locations via the "Add to Favorites" button. Right now, you can add the deviation to your Favorites folder OR you can add the deviation to one of your Collection folders, but you can't add it both to your Favorites and your Collections from that handy-dandy drop-down list because that button immediately becomes a "Remove from Favorites" button as soon as the first selection is made. After making your first selection from the button, you then have to drag and drop the deviation to your other folders. Of course, to make this change happen, one would have to click at least twice every time, once to choose a location and another time to indicate "OK, I'm through making all my selections," but I think I could handle that  . Or, better yet, you could add a separate "Remove from Favorites" button so that we could use the "Add to Favorites" button multiple times, with locations grayed out that have already been designated  .

Allow members to sort deviations within their folders by artist names. Sometimes I'd just love to be able to view all the deviations I've faved for a particular artist, grouped together on one page or adjacent pages. This type of sorting might also provide an alternative for members who keep separate Collection folders for each of their favorite artists, which can ultimately run into a hundred or more collection folders.

__________

~ArcLightKey suggested a way to rate groups.
I understand polls being premium/super group only, and don't want that to change. But could you add a feedback widget for groups? I was thinking something like this:

What do you think of this group?
Option 1: 5 stars
Option 2: 4 stars
Option 3: 3 stars
Option 4: 2 Stars
Option 5: 1 Star
Option 6: No Stars

From the Suggestions Forum

*jadekaiba Suggested having more ways to automatically sort favorite folders.

`ebonred Suggested that film deviation pages be redesigned to be more efficient and work better with the site as a whole.

From the Visual Suggestions gallery

*UJz suggested A redesign of the group voting process.
*yemto suggested a more advanced mature content filter.

From the Written Suggestions Gallery

:thumb310222998: =TlKl suggested several things related to recently faved deviations, the mobile interface and CSS.
Suggestion on Stopping Art theftThis is only a counter measure, not an all-in-one anti theft solution. Its just like how Captcha is used as an anti spam counter measure. Nothing can truly stop art theft (or Spam) but counter measures can be implemented to slow it down and help prevent some cases.

I think deviantART should embed a special code of metadata into each deviation uploaded to deviantART. This metadata in theory could be used to help prevent and stop art theft by disallowing anyone not authorized by the original author from re-uploading the picture.

I mean if deviantART can tell you the camera brand and model, lens type, zoom, DPI, time of day and week, the time
=Yamitora1 suggested using a form of metadata to help decrease art theft.

Suggestions From Elsewhere on the Site

~NatureGuide suggested that literature deviations be scrollable to prevent them from stretching the page to far.

Discuss

This week's discussion topic is a little different, and it has to do with a poll I recently made on making visual suggestions. For those of you who have made visual suggestions before, did you find the process confusing or simple? For those that haven't, what stopped you from doing it? Did you just not have an idea, or were you not sure how to go about making the visual representation? For everyone, what resources would you find helpful when making visual suggestions or written suggestions?

Discuss!

Thanks for reading!

There's a lot of good suggestions here. I particularly like the thought of rearranging our favorites by artist, or perhaps oldest > newest (or visa versa). I'd also like to rearrange them manually, by dragging them to where we want them. :)

You can re-arrange deviations by dragging them in collections, but not the featured area. It would be nice to have it there as well.

Oh, wow, I never noticed that. Thanks! I knew it couldn't move in the featured area, so I never thought to try it elsewhere. That's awesome. Thanks for telling me. :)

It depends on the suggestion. For me, most of them were simple to make. :la:

What resources would you find helpful when making visual suggestions or written suggestions?
Not so much a resource, but the main thing you need to have when making a visual or written suggestion is presentation. I.e. Written Suggestions shouldn't be in one big long paragraph. It annoys people and they would be less inclined to read it. Visual suggestions shouldn't have eye cancerous colours, the font should be readable and the added feature in the suggestion needs to look like it's part of the site. :D

And proof-read!
