My thoughts on Premium Content

Tue Jul 24, 2012, 5:19 PM
So, pretty much everyone knows about the Premium Content Platform by now. It's basically a new system that allows artists to sell content for points and get the profits either in cash or points. The intended purpose is to sell digital content such as stock images, brush packs, etc. I, however, have been using it mainly for taking commissions. How? Well I created a bunch of commission sheets for my basic "stock" commissions, ones that are very simple and don't require to much from the client aside from a basic reference photo/drawing. When a client wants to purchase a commission they simply pay for the download and send me a note or comment with what they want drawn. It works very well, and it allows me to easily take point commissions and make real profits from them. But what if someone wants a commission that doesn't fit one of my "stock" sheets? Simple, I talk with the client until we settle on a price for whatever they want. Once a points price has been agreed on, I upload a special, one time commission sheet that is priced for their commission. They purchase the download and I delete the commission sheet. It's very simple, and I love that it lets me take commissions in points since many younger people don't have access to paypal/creditcards but do have access to points. So far I've made close to $40 using the system. Of course, I still take paypal commissions as well, and those are slightly cheaper due to not having to deal with the 20% fee deviantart takes.
And the 20% fee. I think a lot of artists are confused by this. They think that the 20% is being taken from what they sell, which isn't exactly true. Here's how +spyed explained it, which breaks it down very well: "It works out so that your royalty as a seller returns $0.01 (USD) for
every 1 Point. (80 Points = 100 cents, you earn 80%, so a 100 Point
transaction returns 100 cents ($1.00) to you, while the buyer is
spending $1.25, which is equal to 100 Points.)"
So, basically, the 20% is coming out of the buyers pocket, not the sellers. If I set the price of a download to $10, I will be making $10 but the buyer will be paying more than $10.

Now, as much as I do love the system for how easy it makes for me to take point commissions, there are some things I'd like to see added:
  • Custom user agreements need some work. Aside from the bugs I've run into and reported, I would love to be able to save multiple custom agreements and have each one show up every time I submit. Basically, I'd like to be able to create a "Commissions Agreement" and a "Custom Box Resources Agreement" and have each of those agreements show up as an option when I submit, along with the standard agreement and the "Custom Agreement." I think this would make it a lot easier for users who want to use the same agreement for all their stuff, without having to paste the agreement in every time.
  • It would also be nice to have the custom user agreement box be Stash writer based so that we could have access to easy formatting tools.
  • I'd like to be able to have more in depth stats when it comes to what's being downloaded. This will allow me to see what stuff is the most popular, and adjust things accordingly as well as make more, similar products.
  • It would also be useful to see who downloads a piece, but I know this is something the staff are already aware of people wanting so I'm not going to press it to much.
